Names of Jesus ~ Dayspring

We are studying in Luke on Sunday mornings and this word for Jesus really struck me this week. I have never really given it much thought, having read over it numerous times. Just another example of the Word being alive, and seeking to teach us different things from the Word at different seasons of life. Jesus is that Dayspring.

"Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us." (Luke 1:78)

I have a new Bible that has Greek and Hebrew translations in it. I am just loving the word study with it. I searched and found this great article from Henry M. Morris, another of my Bibles includes his commentary.

The Dayspring from on High

"Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us." (Luke 1:78)
This is an unusual, but beautiful, name of the coming Savior given Him by Zacharias when he was "filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied" (Luke 1:67). In that same prophecy, Zacharias also called that coming one "the Highest" and "the Lord" who would "give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins" (vv. 76-77). Just six months later, Jesus was born.
The Greek word here translated "dayspring" is so translated only this one time. It refers to the metaphorical spring from which the sun springs forth each day, and so is usually translated simply as "the east." It is interesting that it is used three times in connection with the story of the wise men "from the east" who saw "his star in the east" and then, when they reached Bethlehem once again, "the star, which they saw in the east," led them to the one who was Himself "the dayspring" (Matthew 2:1-2, 9).

There is one other sunrise appropriately presaged here. Many years later the women who had tearfully watched the Lord being crucified and buried, came to His sepulcher to anoint Him with sweet spices "at the rising of the sun" (Mark 16:2) immediately after He had risen from the dead. Here a closely related word is the word translated "rising."

There is another great sunrise coming, as promised in the last chapter of the Old Testament. "But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings" (Malachi 4:2). He who is Himself "the light of the world" (John 8:12) will someday even replace the sun in the new Jerusalem. There will never be another sunrise after that, for "there shall be no night there . . . neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light" (Revelation 22:5). HMM

U.S. Elections from Home School in the Woods *Review

U.S. Elections History Lap-Pak Review

Home School in the Woods has long been a favorite for our family when it comes to history. This year is election year and was the perfect time to review HISTORY Through the Ages Hands-on History Lap-Pak: U.S. Elections. We downloaded our product and set to work to help my 5th and 8th grader learn a bit about the election process and have a fun while doing it. Suggested grades are 3rd through 8th and I think that was accurate.

U.S. Elections History Lap-Pak Review

Home School in the Woods gives you step by step instruction on printing, teaching, and assembling the lap pak.

The reading text can be printed in booklet form or just on 8.5 by 11 paper. I chose to print it out with the 8.5 by 11.

Each heading corresponds to one of the mini projects for the lap pak. The teacher can read each section, or have the student if they are older. There is also the option of having it read to you with the audio of the text. I did enjoy the audio, simply because the kids were listening to a different teacher other than me. I love how each segment tells you exactly where to to start on the audio, as it is continuous if you just hit play.

Starting from the top, you read over the first section, print out the papers according to directions. I did print out some of the directions so that I had easy access to them rather than going back and forth on the computer.

I loved the ease of reading exactly what to print out, and how to assemble each individual project. If you had these available for the kids they could easily work on the project alone, but what's the fun in that? Lap Booking time has always been my favorite part of our school day.

So far we have established that this is an excellent, teacher friendly product. Easy and fun for the teacher. But what about the content and the kids perspective?

My kids are not big history buffs, I know... So when I told them we were going to be learning about election, I kind of got those scowling eyes. Of course Home School in the Woods recued their scowls when I told them we were going to be making a lap pak of elections. They get into creative mode, and almost.. forget that they are learning history!

They still had to be spoon fed with the history information, and that is where the audio portion was great for me.
Some of the things were learned were
Definition of Election
Different forms of Government
The Branches of our Government
Voting Rights
Some of the Political Parties
Caucus and Primaries
Presidential Platforms
Raising Money
Electoral College
Actual Election
Inauguration

The U.S. Elections lap pak covers the spectrum of how we got to where we are today with our government, as well as looking forward to our upcoming election.

We worked on the booklets as we went along and stored them in a zip lock bag. You don't assemble the lap pak until the end of the unit.

We did not get through the entire unit in the review time, so we assembled what we had just to show how the lap pak works. We will be finishing it and working on it as we gear up for the KY Caucus coming up in early March.

Jot Bible Life Notes *Review #biblejournal

I have had the JOT Bible Life Notes for a couple months now. I really wanted to get a feel for it before I shared it with you.
It is a large journal to use with all of your Bibles. Use it for sermons, Bible studies, cell groups, personal study. All of your notes relating to specific verses are all in one place.

The JOT Bible lists each book of the Bible, with each chapter and verse. Each verse offers two blank lines to jot notes on. Just flip to where you are reading in the Word, and write a note in the JOT Bible.

I use several Bibles. I just love switching between versions while I study. I do write notes in my Bible, but have found often that I can't remember which one I wrote a specific note in, and when I go to find it to remember.. I have to spend an excess amount of time trying to find it.

I have taken the JOT Bible to church for sermons. I was concerned, as it is rather a large book. I can manage on my lap to hold my Bible and the JOT Bible, at the same time and still be able to take notes. I just rest my open Bible on the open JOT Bible and work right on my lap with no problem.  My pastor is very much an expository preacher, so most of what we are learning about comes directly from the word.  I love that I can take it each week with me to church and flip to Luke where we are currently working, and no matter which Bible I brought that week, I am still with all of my notes. I used small notebooks before the JOT Bible, and I would struggle to keep track of them. You won't lose the JOT Bible!

In my own personal study I am in Numbers and have been taking notes as I read. I need notes to remind me and job my memory, and the JOT Bible is perfect for that.

The JOT Bible would also be excellent for Bible Journaling. There has been an insurgent of people illustrating their Bible, adding washi tape, stickers, drawings, and visuals to illustrate and remember the Word. The JOT Bible with all of the open space would be an excellent tool for that artistic bend as well.

I do use a gel pen, so you can see through the pages just a little bit. I like the crispness of my pen, so I am willing to deal with it showing through. Regular ink pens will not. The paper weight is thicker than a Bible paper, but not as thick as copy paper, keeping the JOT Bible at a perfect weight. With 1622 lined pages, that is important.

Leaving a legacy for my children is very important to me. I want to leave a legacy with the WORD of God for them. What better way for them to see God, and realize my heart for Him, then to have a compilation of my notes about His Word. This book will be a treasure for my children long after I am gone.

Blogging Funk.. back to Hupomone #wordoftheyear

You ever get in that blogging funk?? Where you just really aren't sure what to share with your readers. No time for writing thought provoking articles. No time for working on reviews and giveaways. Do they really want to see pictures of random things?

That's where I am at with the blog right now. I am swamped with being a Mom and homeschooler. I love to do the giveaways and reviews, but time just hasn't allowed. I love to share great books with you, but I barely get time to read anymore.

I am still plugging away, reviewing for The Old Schoolhouse which I absolutely love. I have gotten super selective in what I review, just knowing the amount of time is needed into reviewing curriculum to give you an accurate review. We have had a fun time so far this year with the books and projects we are working on.

Hupomone was my word for the year. It means staying consistent. I need to get back to that, even in my blogging. I am looking toward writing a weekly post on the Names of God. I have so enjoyed learning the new names, as characteristics of God. I am hoping it will bless you as it is me.

GrubMarket Organic Food *Review & Giveaway

It was one of the snowiest evenings of the season. Schools were cancelled, stores were closed and even the grocery stores were closing. The Fed Ex truck stopped in the street, fearful to drive in my snowy driveway, and brought me a box. Boy was it cold outside.

I was amazed when I opened the box!! On one of the coldest days of the year, I got fresh fruit in the mail from GrubMarket. California fresh fruit.

This was a heavy box, and right on top was the GrubMarket information. This was a great information card to let me know more about the products I was receiving.

The fruits were wrapped and protected. The only defect I saw was one small bruise on an apple, and a small indent in a pear. Coming from California to Kentucky, I thought that was outstanding!

What a variety of fruit!! Some my kids hadn't even tried which really made it a great treat. We had a pomegranate, pomelo, dates, pineapple, pear, apples, oranges in a variety of sizes and styles.

The first one eaten out of the box by my 14 and 11 year old??? The Pear!
I had to Google avocado however as I always thought they were a vegetable, and low and behold, they are a fruit.

Look at this display! Beautiful on a cold winter day.

My 14 year old made us a fruit salad to go with dinner.
