I must first admit that when I saw this one come up for review I almost passed on it. I get too many plates spinning at once and this just didn't catch my eye at first, I think the title maybe threw me off. I read over it again a few days later and went ahead and signed up for it. I really think that was a Holy Spirit thing. This book has been outstanding!! Valerie understands that the true Word of God is thee book we need to focus on. She doesn't claim that hers is anything outstanding or wonderful, just a tool to lead us to the Word of God.
It is far more than just another non fiction book on how to study the Bible and learn to pray. She has a worksheet available online for each chapter to use to reflect, and jot down notes. Good thing as I was already getting the highlighters out on the introduction chapter! I printed out the first 5 chapters of notes to use for the week. I read the book real quick for the review, but that surely won't suffice.
I am already jumping back in and working through the chapters more slowly and including the workbook pages.
This is not a sit down and read in a few days and hope to glean a little bit from style of book. It really has ministered to me, even in my busy life, that I must get serious about the Word of God. I have a Bible study time each morning, but nothing like I desire. I thank God for woman like this to mentor us who desire a deeper walk with the Lord.
Some chapter titles include:
Worrier to Warrior: A Guide to Prayer
Half a Bag of Powdered Donuts: A Guide to Self Control
I Heart Tech: A Guide to Influence
Never Been Kissed: A Guide to Waiting
and so much more! 24 chapters to encourage your heart in specific areas. And much more than just encouragement, real ideas to get your started on making changes in your life. You are no longer a student who is learning, it's time to put these things into action!
Valerie says, "Finishing schools and learning social graces have always been fascinating to me. Maybe it's because I'm awkward and ungraceful to my core and love the idea that these things are taught instead of things you are born with. As I've grown in my walk with the Lord, I have realized that living an intentional life is the same. We don't flip a switch when we become a Christian and suddenly have a life that is overflowing with fruit. I've still got this rebellious flesh to contend with. And although I desire my days to be lived intentionally and on purpose, many days, they are simply filled with things like shopping and binging on Netflix or ice cream. We've got to learn how to grow. We've got to learn what obstacles we will face (because there will be obstacles) and how to overcome them. We have got to dig into what the Bible says and study that truth more than the voices of this world."
Valerie Woerner is owner of Val Marie Paper. She and her husband, Tyler, live in Louisiana with their daughter, Vivi Mae. The Finishing School is her first book.
