Curriculum Overload, Homeschool Planning

I just graduated my second son this spring. We have been collecting curriculum for over 13 years now. I have gotten rid of some, especially as we have moved over the years. Also I have hung on to books that 'I might need' later. We have quite the extensive collection of books and home school supplies.

Add in that the huge blessing of reviewing for The Old Schoolhouse Crew for 3 years, with a huge range of both online and actual curriculum for review. Where to start for this upcoming year?

Somewhere in these stacks, lay our next school year!

We will be doing 11th, 8th, 5th and 2nd grades.
I am starting the process of reviewing what worked for us last year, and what didn't. What type of learning style to focus on for each child. Also reviewing my own reviews to see what I have already that has gotten put away for a season.

I am guessing that much of our upcoming year should be covered by items we already own! That is one of the blessings of having a large family and having 2 already graduated. We tend to have a groove going in the type of materials we need. Kids number 3 and 4 are very different than my self motivated kids 1 and 2 though. I have to keep that in mind as I organize and seek to give them the best school year yet.

We are planning a very academic year. No basketball, much to their dismay. With the baby being born last fall, and my plethora of health issues with the blood clots and surgeries, we simply got behind. I want to feel like we are getting caught up this year and our main goal and focus is on academics. They will get some socializing of course as we still have church and youth group. The extra activities will be very selective however this year, doing things that fit in academically with what we are working on at the time.

We also have the baby to tend to this year. I graduated another one, and then re-upped for 13 more years of homeschooling! What was I thinking.. oh yeah, this super cuteness!

I am starting with organizing our current school room shelves, and writing on a clipboard the things I want to continue this school year. As I pull things off the shelf I don't need I will relocate to the basement shelves. After I go through everything in the school room I will check out the basement shelves and see if there are things to make their way up stairs. After that I am going to be really looking through the online programs and my reviews of them to see if I want to incorporate any of them.

Quite the undertaking, and that is why I decided I better get started planning. I am using an excellent planner called Homeschool Planet (which I will be reviewing soon), which is an online planner that I have really loved! So easy to keep track of the things we are working on for the summer, all in one place. Perfect style of planner is you can switch to not having a paper one.

I'll be back to give you a sneak peek at what makes the cut this school year!

  1. Awe, what a cutie you have! We'll be graduating our first this year with no babies or another 13 years :( My youngest is 10 so only 8 more years to go. I'd love to have more 'students' (kids) though :)
