Home to Chicory Lane by Deborah Raney *Review

About the book: Landyn longs for home, but her mother may have other plans.

Audrey Whitman's dreams are coming true. Now that their five kids are grown, she and her husband, Grant, are turning their beloved family home into a cozy bed and breakfast just a mile outside of Langhorne, Missouri.
Opening weekend makes Audrey anxious, with family and friends coming from all over to help celebrate the occasion. But when Audrey's daughter, Landyn, arrives, the U-Haul she's pulling makes it clear she's not just here for a few days. Audrey immediately has questions. What happened in New York that sent Landyn running home? Where was Landyn's husband, Chase? And what else was her daughter not telling her? One thing was for sure, the Chicory Inn was off to a rocky start. Can Audrey still realize her dream and at the same time provide the comfort of home her daughter so desperately needs?

Purchase a copy:
My Thoughts:
This is what I consider a nice summer read. It isn't overly deep and emotionally charged. There are some issues for the family to get through of course, but it isn't a book to bog you down. If you want just a nice light introduction to the family then this is a great book for you. The series is fun, the family is one you would want to get to know, and they aren't fake and without problems. It is like getting to know your neighbors who just so happen to own a really cool bed and breakfast!
You will want to go and visit! I think the book has a lot a great theme of family and how they stick together through it all. It also has a theme of self exploration as Landyn tries to find her place along with husband Chase. But they aren't the only ones. As the bed and breakfast is newly open we see Audrey trying to redefine herself as an empty nester as well.
All issues we will eventually deal with in a nice friendly read.

About the author: Deborah Raney's books have won numerous awards, including the RITA, National Readers Choice Award, HOLT Medallion, and the Carol Award, and have twice been Christy Award finalists. She and her husband, Ken, recently traded small-town life in Kansas---the setting of many of Deborah's novels---for life in the (relatively) big city of Wichita, where they enjoy gardening, antiquing, movies, and traveling to visit four children and a growing brood of grandchildren who all live much too far away.

Easy Care First Aid Kit *Review & Giveaway

Easy Care First Aid Kit from Tender Corporation is your perfect Back to School First Aid kit. With the start of school comes the start of sports season! All ages are off to the ball fields to get their game on and Mom better have a First Aid kit available in her car for them. Much more than mere bandages.  because let's face it.. there are times we need much more than just a small bandage.

I just love the EZ care system where there are 6 pockets, labeled with everything you need in it for the specific need. If your little one gets a bee sting, you would open up the pocket 2 and get out what you need. The rest of the pockets stay intact and you don't get all of your supplies all over your bag, mixed up.
There are plenty of bandages in assorted sizes as well for those spills on the playground.

There is headache and pain medicines in the kit so please keep it out of reach of young children. Make them aware that the kit is for Mom and Dad to use only.

Each pocket also on the reverse side has instructions and tips for care.

It never fails that we will be out and about, at the playground or a sporting event and have a need for a first aid kit.. yet we don't have one on hand. The Easy Care First Aid kit is now in my main car. I definitely think these are worth having one in each vehicle!

UberSmart Math Facts *Review

UberSmart Math Facts Review

UberSmart Software brings us a downloadable math fact program titled UberSmart Math Facts
Used for K-6th grade this program is for Windows 7, 8, XP and Vista only
I love how it can be used by 8 or more student for just $24.95.

Once you download it, there are several options for use depending on the age of the child and what facts you would like to work with.

The Learn button will take you to Beginners where you can do Dot Cards (adding domino faces).

UberSmart Math Facts Review
The Intermediate level will do more of the traditional Flash Cards, choosing from add, subtract, multiplication and division.

UberSmart Math Facts Review
The flashcards in the learn mode are not timed. For timed drills you would go to the Compete button.

Practice mode gives two options for beginners; dot cards and key board entry. This gives beginners the opportunity to learn the numbers on the keyboard and learn those before they are timed in a competitive manner. Intermediate will continue to practice with flash cards.

UberSmart Math Facts Review

The Test portion of the UberSmart Math Facts gives an assessment test while the Intermediate level gives a mastery test.
The test portion gives you a good idea of where the kids are as they study and learn. A great place for the parents to track their learning processs.

The last tab is Maintain and this is where you add in your students, change your administrative password, get updates and information about the program.

This is not a flashy system. It is basically like doing flashcards, but releases the 2nd person and allows the computer to do the work. It is perfect for those in between times when I am working with one student and I can set up a child to do review while I am busy. It is great for my 6 year old! He gets done with his other independent work and I can have him learning rather than disrupting the rest of us.

The  Addition/Subtraction goes up through the 9s.  Multiplication/Division has the option to set it to go up to 9's - 20's.
This really gives a lot of variation for my different age level children. I can lot into each of their accounts and set the specific times tables (or addition) that I want them to work on

I have used this with my 1st grader, 4th grader and just a short bit with my 7th grader. We all struggle with our multiplication tables and this program has been so helpful in the consistency needed to memorize. I have actual flash cards, but I am not consistent enough to remember to use them.. but if I write UberSmart on my planner than I know to set the kids up to be free to work.

UberSmart Facts also has free printable math facts you can get HERE

Being as it is not real flashy, or 'game like' it isn't something the kids ask to do in their free time. It isn't a 'game' for them to play, rather a consistent help in mastering skills they very much need. They complained at first that it was boring. We pushed through though and I think they are enjoying seeing their own progress and realizing that they are indeed mastering some of these hard math skills simply through repetition. I can not stress how important it is for the kids to have a strong mastery of these facts prior to moving on to higher math. I am very thankful for the opportunity to utilize this tool for the kids.

Conrad and the Cowgirl Next Door by Denette Fretz

This has got to be one of my favorite series from Zonderkidz! The Next Door Series.
Conrad and the Cowgirl Next Door takes Conrad to cowboy training at his Uncle Clint's ranch. Conrad is prepared with his "Mega Ultimate Extreme First Aid Kit" for everything he may encounter.
As Conrad learns his way around the ranch, he finds need for his First Aid Kit very often! Things he learn are : Don't squat with spurs on, Don't lasso pigs, Don't pet untame barn cats and more.
Of course there is neighbor Imogene Louise Lathrop who has to be present each time Conrad is learning his lesson; giving her two cents worth.
Can we say "know it all"! That is Imogene. And to make matters worse, she rides off with the horse that Uncle Clint was trying to get for Conrad to learn on while he is stuck with a llama!
This book is hilarious in so many ways. The illustrations go perfectly along with the written word!
Conrad keeps his cool, and between his First Aid Kit and the Word "love your enemies", Conrad is able to come out the big man on top!

Love, love this book!!

How to Make a Wet Bag for Cloth Diapering

I found this great youtube video online to share with you on how to make a Wet Bag. I figured I would include it and also some photos of my work in progress!

 You will need:
2 pieces of cotton fabric cut 13 by 16
2 pieces of PUL cut 13 by 16
14 inch zipper
polyester thread

I followed the size given in the instructional video, you can adjust your size by cutting your fabric smaller or larger depending on the size you would like your bag. I thought the size given was good for a larger diaper bag. I think I may make one just a bit smaller for those quick trips where we only may need to put one diaper in a smaller bag.

Just around 9 minutes she leaves out quite a bit so I thought I would clarify. You are going to sew entirely around the cotton fabric, on all three sides to hold them together. Then you will sew the PUL sides together, just the sides per her instruction. I chose to sew the side, and around the corner to the bottom about 2 inches. Back up and stop my stitch, cut it, and then leave about a 6 inch gap. Then I restarted along the bottom, turning the next corner and up the side. I prefer that method for bags because when you get to finishing off the PUL, you already have a good start at it being sewn together and it is easier to just top stitch it then and sew up the 6 inch gap. She sews her method at 10:35 minutes.
