Going to College and Paying for It *College Common Sense

Photobucket
With a senior in High School, another as a sophomore and four more coming up the pipe, Going to College and Paying for it Online Video and Workbook caught my attention right away! How ever will we pay for college for six children without incurring the equivalent of the national debt? Ok, maybe not that much, not with resources like this one by Denise Ames, financial adviser.

Photobucket
College is a journey, not a destination, and Ms Ames has had over 7 years working with parents and students to help them understand that process. The College Common Sense video and workbook  can be purchase in physical DVD format for $50.00. The online video and workbook which I reviewed is available for $25 for a 12 month log in access. With my oldest three being fairly close in age I found that the online program will work out great for us.

This DVD is the heart of the program with six videos and worksheet suggestions and printouts to go through the process of deciding on a college, applying for financial aid and even great ideas for writing your applications to include all of the activities you have done through out your high school career.

In addition to the DVD there is a weekly Lesson Plan you can have sent to your email. This lesson plan gives additional suggestions like attending a College Fair, reviewing specific scholarship websites, and even taking timed tests and reviewing for the ACT or SAT national exams.

The lesson plans I felt were a great asset to the videos and lessons online. There is also a monthly newsletter you can sign up to receive via email that shares stories and questions from parents, and adds a bit of personal wisdom from Ms Ames. Any updates to the program and highlighted information would be found in the free newsletter.

I used this program with my senior in High School. He plans on continueing at the community college where he is currently taking dual credit. For him the finding of the college was already completed so we didn't have to work through those components, though he will plan to transfer after two years and these worksheets will be very helpful then.

My personal recommendation is to start utilizing this program your sophomore year, or very early junior year to get the full impact and to be able to get a jump start on the scholarship planning. Because we waiting too long with our oldest (aren't the oldest always the guinea pigs?) we found some scholarship applications are due nearly a year before they even start college. Beginning this program early will allow for the student to compete for more scholarship opportunities. I will have my sophomore work through these videos and worksheets this summer to gear up for his planning.

Ms. Ames has the weekly lesson plans divided into elementary, middle school, high school, and college aged children. I find that using this program in high school makes the most sense. My own elementary children have no desire to learn about college, but that isn't to say there aren't some mature, driven, young students out there who are career minded at a young age. I enjoyed how Ms. Ames took that in account when planning her program.

PishPosh Baby *Sponsor Post

PishPosh Baby is the #1 online Baby Shop has gotten even easier to utilize!
Their new stylish website is easy to navigate with clear headings for products you would like to shop for
strollers
car seats
on the go
feeding
nursery
bedding
gifts

With Sub categories in each of the main headings to narrow your search down.
Easy to go directly to the product you are looking for by name in the keyword or item search.
Know which brand you are looking for? You can even search their wide selection by brand name.

I was looking through the blankets on the website, searching for what I may want to purchase to have on hand when we start doing foster care with little ones. I found the Delore Baby Blankets and found that I needed more information on them. So I decided to click on the icon for chatting with a real mom, so I could share that experience with you as well.  PishPosh Baby makes it easy with their Real Moms Real Advice line (chat or call). Where a Real mom is available to answer your questions between 9am and 9pm. Baby items change so frequently that it really is helpful to have a knowledgeable Mom available with advice.

I was prompted to type my name and email address, and then can choose whether or not I want to receive emails of special deals. I was first connected with Mom Rep S and asked about the Delore blanket. In the description it does not say what fabric the blanket is made of. If it is more of a fleece, or cotton, or a different blend. It also does not say from which country it was made. So I asked these along with the sizing information to see if it would be a good fit for a receiving blanket or bigger.  It only took a minute of two to be connected to my Rep, but then after 12 minutes I either lost her or something happened with the chat. I tried again, this time getting a new Mom Rep S2 and I asked the same questions. She needed to contact Delore to find out the country of origin and asked to call me with the info. I instead asked her to email it to me. I think I asked a fairly hard question as I wasn't able to easily find it on a google search either. I found that the fabric was a minky, which I suspected, but not the origin.

I would really like to see more information on each of the products, basic things like where it is made, and what materials it is made out of. I think that would be super helpful to shoppers.

The selection from PishPosh Baby is fantastic! They have a wide variety of products if you are expecting a new little one or just browsing for a gift.   Always fast shipping, free shipping for orders over $74.

On February 21–23, more than 5,000 gathered in Orlando to stand on the bedrock of God's truth in an age of compromise. Alistair Begg, Sinclair Ferguson, Steven Lawson, R.C. Sproul, R.C. Sproul Jr., Cal Thomas, and Ravi Zacharias examined the Word of God and what it says about the resurrection of Christ, the trustworthiness of Scripture, God's plan for the family, our need to show mercy, the importance of theology, the primacy of preaching, the exclusivity of Jesus, the place of the church, our call to be on the offense against the city of man, and the final victory of Christ and His people.
All of the messages from this conference—including two questions and answers sessions and five optional sessions—are available for you to stream for free at Ligonier.org. Thank you to everyone who attended.

Moka Becomes a Water Dog *Book Review

The Dog on my Feet series starts out with Moka Becomes a Water Dog by Jeff Stevenson, illustrated by Nicholas Voshall.

Ethan and Lucas get a new Labrador for Christmas and she loves to play at the cabin on vacation. She has never been in a lake before and is a bit fearful of the water. Dad has a brilliant idea to tempt Moka into the water to play, helping her to forget her fears. Moka loves her new toy and learns to be a water dog!
This books makes an excellent easy reader. The words are basic and easy for a beginner to read. The simple, large text will help kids feel confident in their skills while learning about Moka and her adventure to becoming a water dog.
Illustrator Nicholas Voshall adds comedy to the book with his childlike drawings, giving the story an overall feel that it was created by a youngster, for his friends.  The back of the book includes activities for the young reader to enjoy. A few coloring pages, a maze and a word find.

Chats on the Farmhouse Porch #82

Everyday Ruralty

One of those crazy busy weeks where one child has to be at basketball practice 20 miles south of us, and another son has to be at college 20 miles north of us at one time!! So no beautiful clipart for this one, but didn't want to miss my chat this week!

 Questions
1. Is there a room in your home that you'd like to redecorate or remodel?
2. Did you watch the Oscars?
3. How many pair of blue jeans do you own?
4. What was your favorite toy as a child?
5. If you could visit a country in Europe, which would you choose?

 Answers
1. We moved into our home about a year ago. I have never liked the kitchen wallpaper, flooring and counters.. so someday that will be the first room to work on. My computer/quilting room needs some serious shelves and cabinets and hubby has started on that some, that will be the 2nd one I really want done.

2. Nope didn't watch it, don't care. I don't watch many movies or TV

3. I think I have 2 pair that fit. Need more, but with summer coming I will hold off again.

4. There are tons! I love my Barbie McDonalds and Fashion Plates best I think

5. Europe, making me look at a map now! Italy is in Europe right, that is my very favorite place that I must visit someday!!

Hope we can have a longer chat next week! Be blessed. Stop by and see Everyday Ruralty and my chatting buddies by clicking on the button above.

Reading the Word of God

Have you read the Word today? You know, the words from our Creator God?
I have been saved for 20 years, accepted Jesus as my savior and Lord at age 20 in a secular college. Lately I have been so convicted about getting into God's word, much thanks from a spirit led pastor who gives us tastes, and creates a hunger for more.

How many Bibles do you own? I gathered mine this morning, ones I personally own and use. These aren't even all of them, and if you add in my hubby and 6 children, I think our stack would be enormous. I may have to try it for a photo op!

I got my very first Bible when I was young and had started attending a sunday school class with a friend. My Dad gave me his bible as my very first one. It is KJV, and at that age was very difficult to understand. I took it with me, but didn't quite get a grasp of what it was about. My Dad got it from his church in 1960, when he was 8 years old.

Over the years I have had different Bible versions, typically the NIV being the one I used most often. I would study various books of the Bible as church and Bible study groups led. Dabble here and there.
Right now even I utilize 3 different Bibles in my study. I have my Bible that I take to church, underline in and take notes with. I prefer to have the same version of Bible as the pastor, just for ease in following along. This is a NKJV Bible and a Mission minded Bible titled The Take Action Bible.

Then I have the Bible I am working through in the mornings during my devotion time. It is the One Year Chronological Bible in NIV. I find reading the Word chronologically gives me a better understanding of the history and the events and when they happened.

When I need more information or clarity on a passage I go to the Henry Morris Study Bible and this one is in KJV.

With all of these Bibles, and all of the resources at my finger tips, I have yet in the 20 years of being saved, read the entire Bible!! What a grieving realization. How many of my Christian friends are in the same position, not even having read THE BOOK in it's entirety?

This book is a personal letter to us, from the Creator of the Universe. From the Great I Am, the Prince of Peace, the Lord of Lords.. and I haven't read it completely through.
Dwell on the  past or make a decision to change???  I have been reading daily since the beginning of January. I have found that the Chronological Bible , with each day assigned, has been the easiest for me to stay on track. I have owned this Bible for several years, but this year it is different. This year I have the desire and longing to know more of Him.

Do you prefer reading the Bible online? Not much of a book person. There are online programs that organize Bible reading for you like the One Year bible Online. With this and other programs you can read chronological, or according to the scripture as organized. You can schedule to read it in a year and have any start date you need. No excuse to wait until next January to start at the beginning of the book!!

Now there are even nifty apps you can use for your techno gadgets to read through the word on those!
YouVersion is the one I have on my phone. The possibilities with it are just amazing! I rarely use it, as I prefer having the physical book in my hand, but I do enjoy knowing that I have an access to any version of the Word just by clicking on my phone.

Do you even realize the blessing we have with the accessibility of the Word?? I have several copies in my home, access to the internet with free studies, a plethora of resources to study and learn. We are blessed in this country to have the freedom to read the Word, to have Our Creators inspired Word at our fingertips. I just want to challenge myself to make it a #1 priority to complete The Book, the only one that makes a difference for eternity. Wont you join me?
