Kirby Puckernut and the Christmas Surprise

Kirby Puckernut
and the Christmas Suprise

"Kirby Puckernut is Santa’s cleverest little elf. While dreaming up marvelous toys for good girls and boys, Kirby has his best idea yet –
a real elf in every home, all through the holidays, spreading Christmas Magic! Santa finds the perfect family and allows Kirby to serve as the test elf for the first momentous
visit.
From December 1st through Christmas Eve, Kirby travels each night to Els Mere to make toys and bring news to Santa, and returns to the family each morning with notes from Santa and other surprises.
Fun and adventure are at every turn, but not everything goes as planned…
Will Kirby’s idea be a success?"

I typically am not a Santa, or elf type of Christmas celebrator. I like to keep the focus on Christ during the holidays and for me personally it just helps to have alot of books around that focus on that. This story, though it does have Santa and elves, is different in one key way that drew me in, it's Giving Back ministry!
"As author Alicia Richardson spreads news of Kirby Puckernut and the Christmas Surprise, she hopes that you’ll share in another of her family traditions. Support Kenya Keys as they build educational opportunities in rural Africa. For every book sold $1 will be donated to Kenya Keys.
Kenya Keys provides scholarships, builds schools and libraries, and creates leadership opportunities in an area where learning is as treasured as water. Kenya Keys has been helping African youth via educational outreach since 2005."

The story is about an elf from Els Mere that wants to visit the children to see if they are being naughty or nice, and to bring some Christmas magic to their lives. He travels very quickly back and forth and delivers notes between Santa and the children. His first test family in this new program is the Harbsonsen family, Mom, Dad, Izzie, cooper and Sophie. Izzie just turned 13 and doesn't believe in any of the Christmas magic. It is Kirby's hope that he can help her to find some joy in the season again.
The story is much about rekindling the magic of the holiday, the blessing of family and being together to share in the season. I love how it was an intact family with a mom and dad and 3 kids. I can not believe the books lately that I have read and movies even where the parents are divorced or one has died. The kids fought like normal kids, and the teen daughter acted like a normal teen. Made it feel more realistic for the reader. This is a great book to add to your holiday collection!

Don Seegmiller has created a lively story through his illustrations. They are absolutely gorgeous, bright and captivating for all ages. The creativity of the illustrator really adds to a story like this one.
