What do you 'Resolve' to do in 2013??

I have a love/hate relationship with New Years Resolutions. On the one hand I can see them being beneficial to better ourselves in the New Year. To plan for better times, for more discipline, and to lose weight is always at the top of the list. Typically good changes are to come if they are followed through.. IF

The hate part is that I rarely get past the first month and the new plans and goals have flown out the window!
To combat this I thought I would instead of planning Resolutions for the entire New Year, to plan some simply for January. To have a year 'Theme', but to take each month as it comes and evaluate where I am at, and where I think God wants me to be.

I find it often the missing link as I resolve to do #1, #2, and #3, that I had neglected to seek God God in what key things He would have me resolve to do. I can put a lot of emphasis on losing weight, on getting up earlier to an alarm clock, or to make sure to teach my kids Latin, but are those the plans God has for me?

I found a beautiful note on FB that spoke to me as a  2013 theme!

My heart's desire, more of Jesus, less of me! How will this look for one month at a time?

Top of my list is His Word, being in the forefront of learning and listening for what He will resolve for me to do. Have you read the Bible all of the way through? I am disgusted to say I haven't. How can I miss out on reading the letter from my best friend for so long. I read it, yes, pretty much daily, but not in it's entirety.
It takes 30 days to create a habit, and my goal for January is to make God's word my habit. How freeing to focus on just this one thing.

Of course I should exercise more, eat healthier, play with my kids more.. but I have a feeling that by seeking this top priority of God's word, that He will bless me in the other areas as well, providing for the time and motivation to reach additional goals, when I resolve to put Him first.

What resolves do you want to put out there for January? I would love to pray for you and encourage you to work toward these goals that God has laid on your heart. I have a notebook that I am going to physically write these requests down and lay them at the feet of the Father. If you don't feel comfortable leaving a message below simply send me an email and I will put it on my list. I am praying that I can each month add to the list of Resolves that God has for me, as I embrace 2013 and the Resolutions in a Love relationship.. with the Father.

God bless your New Year!!

Keeping on my Shelves from 2012

I review a lot of books over the course of the year, I am kind of addicted to books!
Children's books
Christian Fiction
Homeschool Curriculum
Craft books
Apologetics resources
Non fiction
Bibles
Devotions

So with all that I am reviewing and reading through out the year I have to make cuts to what is going to stay on my shelf, and what I will pass on to others or giveaway. Only the best of the best makes it to stay on the shelf (though I am seriously considering more bookshelves!)

Physically going to my bookshelves I attempted to find the 'keepers', keep in mind that a high majority of the books I review I really do love, but for simplicity sake I just can't keep them all, nor can I list all of the ones I loved here.

In no particular order (because I am seriously not organized) is my best of 2012!

Now is the time to gear up for New Year Resolutions! This Bible Story book and CD collection is a fantastic way to start off your New Year in the Word! Read my review below, and following that is the Rafflecopter to enter to win your own copy of this collection!

The Story for Children, Deluxe Edition features the voice of Max Lucado, who enriches each chapter with a captivating audio reading on the CD's, making each Bible story eve more heart felt.

48 fundamental Bible stories will hold the attention of your children, allowing them to follow along and focus on the vibrant illustrations by artist Fausto Bianchi

This deluxe edition has a beautiful hard bound Bible with stories from Genesis through Revelation. I love when Children's Bibles go through the entire Bible like that. I know Revelations can be intense for children but it is so important! The 3 accompaning CD's go through each of the stories in the bound book. They each range from about 3 minutes to 9 in length, with the average being around 4 minutes. Great for morning devotions!
Each story has the Biblical account and after it is a section titled God's Message where it encourages us with a 'message from God' to us. Some food for thought for you and your youngster to discuss.

Zondervan has done a remarkable job with this collection!

Ice Age Continental Drift DVD

The story was about Manny and his herd living together and the great continental drift divides them. It divides the Mom, Ellie and daughter Peaches, along with  some of the community from the rest of the herd. Manny and friends end up in the ocean on a giant iceberg and are trying to get back to , while being at sea for awhile. Storms, tornado and a giant crab all try to thwart their efforts. At sea he encounters pirates who try to recruit him and his gang. He doesn't want to join up with them, and they get angry. Manny and the herd have to fight the pirates by ramming their boat and recruiting prairie dog like creatures to they fight back. There is only one way to get back to the family and they are having a hard time reaching them. Meanwhile the drift is getting bigger. Ellie and Peaches are leading everyone away from the drift, still worried that they may never see their dad again.

This Ice Age 4 continues the journey of Manny and his unconventional herd as they progress through time. Shows the difficulties in a relationship between parent and child as Manny and his daughter Peaches relate to one another.

The movie is very funny. The Grandma of Sid is very funny, carrying on the fun that we have had with Sid the past few movies!

Some movies by the time you get to number 4, are simply tired of them. Not with Ice Age!! They continue to bring new plots, new characters and great fun  for the entire family!

The Circle Maker Student Edition- Mark Batterson

The legend of the circle maker points to first century BC and a man named Honi. Honi dared to pray in a land where noone heard from God. Honi like the famous prophet Elijah, was famous for his ability to pray for rain. he drew a circle in the dirt, stood in the middle of it and boldly asked for God's mercy and for rain. Honi determined that he would not leave the circle until it rained.

If you know God is on your side, you will pray bigger prayers
Circling things in a prayer walk brings change and this was modeled in the Bible with the Israelites circling Jericho.

What is your personal definition of success. You need to look at the goals, dreams, and promises God is calling you to.
Praying for, versus Praying through is an issue discussed in the book. Praying through is different as it is about consistency and intensity, the type of prayer we should have.

As a pastor at National Community Church in DC, Mark has seen the power of God grows the church as the members walk and pray over areas of their town.
This is not a "name it, claim it' mentality, rather a praying it for God's glory

There are 3 circles
Dream Big
Pray Hard
Think Long

I haven't read the original Circle Maker. Though this is a 'student edition' and I do see it mention career planning, the concepts of prayer were still relevant to me.
