Because normal isn’t working
By Craig Groeschel
“In churches, normal is lukewarm Christianity, self-centered spiritual consumerism, and shallow, me-driven faith. God has become a means to an end, a tool in our toolbox to accomplish what we want. The majority of people claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. And all this is normal. But normal isn’t working”.
Craig Groeschel attacks the ‘normal’ of the Christian life and how we need to become weird, God-weird in order to follow more closely the scriptures. He breaks the book down into chapters on Time, Money, Relationships, Sex, and Values.
In Time we learn that we don’t need more time, we need to use it differently. If we follow Christ were not supposed to be like everyone else. We need to discern what God wants us to accomplish rather than spinning our wheels trying to do it all. Stay engaged in the present.
In Money we read about sacrificial giving and being blessed to bless others. Being rich makes it harder to depend on God, it distracts from the true priorities.
“Normal is to strive for the center of what the world lives like. Weird is to live to be in the center of God’s will” Craig says in the Relationships chapter. Engage in your relationships. Spend time with your family. Turn off the cell phone and electronics and be in the presence of those you strive to have a relationship with.
We can get sidetracked from God all too easily. Satan specializes in destroying our faith. We can prevent his destruction by being in the Word of God, praying, worshiping and being in fellowship with other believers.
I have always felt like an alien or weird in this world because of some of the things I value in my faith with Jesus. It was enlightening to me to have read Weird and have a comradeship with fellow believers who are also weird, in a Jesus loving kind of weird. It acknowledged what I knew to be true and needed the reinforcement. It dares the reader to take a look at what normal is, and really decide if that is where you want to be. If you are a follower of Christ, you truly do not want to be ‘normal’ in the way the world thinks and acts in general.
Fantastic book for all believers to challenge the status quo!!
I received a copy of Weird from Zondervan in exchange for an honest review.
